How Carpenter has become Chelsea's surprise star

What the report says
Chelsea defender Ellie Carpenter has emerged as one of the standout players in the early stages of the Women’s Super League season, according to BBC Sport Football. The Australian has played in almost every league match for unbeaten Chelsea and has contributed from right wing-back with goals, assists and consistently strong attacking numbers. Her impact was highlighted in Chelsea’s win over Roma, when head coach Sonia Bompastor chose to bring on Carpenter and she scored shortly after coming on.
BBC Sport says Carpenter has scored four league goals and added one assist, unusual output for a player in a defensive role. She has also created a high number of chances, made the most successful passes in Chelsea’s final third and been among the league leaders for touches in the opposition box. In Sunday’s 6-0 win over Charlton, she scored again and also led Chelsea in tackles and ball recoveries.
The article points to Chelsea’s tactical setup as a major reason for her form. Bompastor has given Carpenter licence to push forward, while Lucy Bronze’s move into a deeper role has helped balance the team behind her. Chelsea have conceded very few goals this season, which has allowed Carpenter to contribute more in attack without being exposed defensively.
BBC Sport also notes that Carpenter has improved her crossing and overall technical execution since joining from Lyon in 2025, building on the attacking reputation she already had in European football.
