What the report says

Brighton sporting director Mike Cave has outlined how the club identifies and develops young players as part of a recruitment model that has helped the Premier League side compete near the top of the table without heavy transfer spending. BBC Sport reported that Brighton’s strategy combines data-led scouting, detailed checks on a player’s character and background, and a clear development plan for each signing.

The club, which is third in the Premier League, has used its analytics network to monitor players and staff in leagues around the world, then matched those evaluations with subjective assessments of whether a player fits Brighton’s environment. Cave said the club places major importance on how a player and their family adapt to life in the city, because integration off the pitch is seen as part of progress on it.

A key part of the model is the loan system. BBC Sport highlighted examples including Alexis Mac Allister and Jan Paul van Hecke, who were signed young, sent out on loan for experience and later became first-team players before being sold on for significant fees. More recent signings such as Malick Yalcouye and Ibrahim Osman have also followed loan pathways before returning to contribute to the senior squad.

The report says Brighton’s reputation for offering a clear route to the first team, and then moving players on at the right time, has become central to how the club attracts ambitious young talent in a highly competitive market.
