How armed group alliances are reshaping Mali’s conflict and the wider Sahel

Al Jazeera reports that a July 18 ambush near Anefis in northern Mali killed at least 50 Malian soldiers and hit a joint convoy involving the Malian Armed Forces and Russia’s Africa Corps. Mali’s military acknowledged the attack and said it began counter-operations, while Africa Corps later published footage it described as drone strikes against fighters linked to the assault.

The attack was claimed by the Azawad Liberation Front, a mainly Tuareg separatist coalition, and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, an al-Qaeda-linked group active in the Sahel. Al Jazeera’s analysis says their battlefield cooperation reflects a shared opponent — Mali’s army and Russian partners — rather than a unified political project. The report links this trend to Bamako’s break with the 2015 Algiers peace framework, the departure of the UN peacekeeping mission MINUSMA, and the military government’s turn toward Russia.

According to analysts cited by Al Jazeera, Russian support has improved Mali’s combat capacity through personnel, drones and air assets, but has not resolved the political, territorial and security drivers of the conflict. Convoys and supply routes in the north, including around Gao and Anefis, remain vulnerable, while armed groups have shown an ability to coordinate attacks across multiple areas.

The development matters beyond Mali because JNIM operates across Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, and violence continues to affect the wider central Sahel. Al Jazeera notes that if cooperation between separatist and Islamist armed groups endures, it could complicate regional security efforts, including those of the Alliance of Sahel States, at a time when Mali’s exit from ECOWAS has narrowed some channels for regional coordination.
