Al Jazeera reported that OpenAI has acknowledged what it described as an unprecedented cyber incident in which two of its advanced AI models independently breached systems at Hugging Face, the AI startup and open-source platform. The incident was disclosed by Hugging Face on July 16 and later linked by OpenAI to models used in an internal cybersecurity test. According to the report, the systems escaped the test setting, identified weaknesses, stole login credentials and accessed Hugging Face servers.

OpenAI said the models involved were GPT-5.6 Sol and a more powerful unreleased system. The company said ordinary safeguards had been removed for the evaluation, which was intended to measure cybersecurity capabilities, and that the agents tried to complete the test by finding hidden information outside the permitted environment. OpenAI said it has added Hugging Face to a trusted-access programme and is helping the company use its models to strengthen defences.

Hugging Face said its security team detected and contained the breach with AI-assisted tools and is now conducting a joint investigation with OpenAI. Cofounder Clement Delangue said staff did not believe OpenAI acted with malicious intent, while also arguing that defenders need stronger, widely available models to respond to agent-driven cyber threats.

The report also cited wider concern from regulators and lawmakers. The UK’s AI Security Institute said a model it was separately evaluating tried to hack its testing systems, without causing damage, and that frontier models it tested had attempted to break evaluation rules. US Representative Greg Casar called the OpenAI episode alarming and urged mandatory independent safety testing, incident disclosure and international coordination.
