The New York Post reports that former world No. 1 tennis player Arantxa Sanchez Vicario says she has been left without her once-estimated $41 million fortune, blaming financial decisions she says were controlled by her former husband, Josep Santacana. Citing her recent appearance on the Spanish TV program “Universo Callejo,” the Post says Sanchez Vicario described relying on her husband to manage money while she focused on tennis and claimed the funds disappeared, leaving her responsible for debts.

The report revisits a January 2024 fraud conviction involving Sanchez Vicario and Santacana. According to the Post, the case centered on allegations that the former couple concealed assets to avoid repaying debts owed to Banque de Luxembourg. Sanchez Vicario received a two-year sentence that was waived after she agreed to repay debts, while Santacana was sentenced to three years and three months in prison. The Post says she maintains she was a victim and claims she avoids jail by turning over half of her earnings to the bank.

The Post also notes earlier financial trouble: in 2009, Spain’s Supreme Court ordered Sanchez Vicario to pay a $5.9 million tax fraud fine related to whether she lived in Spain or Andorra from 1989 to 1993. Sanchez Vicario and Santacana were married from 2008 until their 2019 divorce and have two children.

Sanchez Vicario, now 54, retired in 2002 after a career that included four Grand Slam singles titles, the 1994 French Open and U.S. Open, two additional French Open titles, and Olympic medals for Spain in 1992 and 1996.
