Houthis renew missile and drone attacks on Yemen’s port of al-Makha

Yemen’s Houthi movement launched a new round of missile and drone attacks on the Red Sea port city of al-Makha, also known as Mocha, on Sunday evening, according to Al Jazeera, extending strikes that had already hit government-held areas along Yemen’s western coast. The latest assault came less than 24 hours after an earlier barrage on al-Makha and its commercial port.

Al Jazeera reported that Yemeni government forces said they intercepted six drones and that two ballistic missiles landed in the sea. The renewed attacks followed an earlier toll that killed at least 11 people, including military personnel and civilians, and wounded dozens more. Authorities also reported damage to port infrastructure, commercial buildings, goods and food supplies. The outlet said government forces additionally destroyed an explosive boat approaching the port.

The Houthis said the strikes were aimed at Saudi troop concentrations and weapons depots, and they described the operation as a response to what they called a Saudi military buildup on the coast and in Taiz province. Footage aired by Houthi-linked media showed missile and drone launches, while government-aligned forces urged residents to stay indoors amid what they described as indiscriminate shelling.

Al Jazeera said the escalation also reached the al-Khokha district, south of Hodeidah, where a Houthi missile allegedly struck the residence of the governor of Hodeidah. The clashes underline the continued volatility of Yemen’s western coastline and the vulnerability of port infrastructure that is important for trade and aid flows.
