Saudi civil defence said a projectile fired by Yemen’s Houthi movement struck the southern Jazan region on Saturday, injuring two people and damaging a mosque, several buildings and vehicles in al-Tuwal governorate. A spokesperson said civilian sites had been hit and described that as a violation of international humanitarian law. Authorities also said emergency measures were put in place, and later reported that the danger had passed in nearby Khamis Mushait after an alert was issued there.

The Houthis said their attack was aimed at a Saudi military base in Sharurah, in Saudi Arabia’s Najran province. Al Jazeera reported that the incident came amid a recent rise in cross-border strikes by the Iran-backed group on southern Saudi Arabia. On Tuesday, the outlet said, Houthi attacks hit civilian and economic targets in several Saudi cities and wounded 73 people, including women and children.

The latest strike fits into the wider escalation in Yemen’s conflict, which Al Jazeera said resumed in July after a period of relative calm under a UN-brokered truce. The reporting also noted that Houthi fighters have expanded control along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, while government forces have opened new fronts in other provinces. The violence has raised concern at the United Nations, where the Security Council recently held an emergency meeting on Yemen.
