Housing Finance Bank takes education loans to campuses

Housing Finance Bank (HFB) has launched a campus-based education financing campaign in Kampala aimed at helping students and families manage the costs of university education, according to a Aug. 5 media statement reported by The Independent Uganda. The bank says its “Tugende Mu Class” outreach is being carried out at Makerere University, Makerere University Business School (MUBS) and Kyambogo University as students return for a new semester.

The programme is designed to support tuition payments and related academic needs, including technology for digital learning. HFB said eligible applicants can access up to Shs5 million for school fees and an additional Shs3 million for laptop support. The bank is also offering on-the-spot account opening, financial literacy sessions and guidance on personal money management for students.

Housing Finance Bank said the campaign responds to the wider pressure created by rising higher-education costs, including accommodation, learning materials and digital devices. A company representative, John Veve, said the effort is meant to make education financing easier to access by bringing services directly to students and parents. Badru Kabogoza, identified as the main organiser of the Kyambogo University Bazaar, also said having financial institutions on campus can make the transition to university life more convenient for freshers and families.

More broadly, the report places the initiative within a growing trend in Uganda as universities increasingly rely on digital tools and students look for financing options beyond tuition alone. The bank said students, parents and guardians can speak with its teams during the campus activations to learn more about the loan products and related banking services.
