Hoima Leaders Rally Voters Ahead of LC1 Elections

Nile Post reports that leaders in Hoima District have appealed to residents to take part in Tuesday’s Local Council I elections, saying village leadership plays a central role in security, dispute resolution and delivery of basic services. The call comes ahead of nationwide LC1 polls in which voters are expected to elect village chairpersons using the Electoral Commission’s lining-up method.

According to the report, Hoima District Chairperson Uthuman Mugisha urged voters to choose honest and capable leaders, linking weak village leadership to problems such as mob justice, theft and fraudulent land transactions. Dr Gerald Kasigwa also encouraged residents not to stay away from the exercise, warning that non-participation would allow others to decide who leads their villages for the next five years.

Hoima City Secretary for Finance Idi Magezi advised voters to participate only in the villages where they are registered and ordinarily live. Nile Post reported that he cited tensions during recent Women Council elections, when disputes arose after some people were found voting outside their areas of residence.

The report adds that Albertine South Regional Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza said security agencies had completed preparations for a peaceful exercise across the region. LC1 elections matter because village chairpersons are often the first point of contact for community concerns, including local security, documentation, land-related matters and coordination with higher levels of government.
