What the report says

Hoima City’s ability to host large numbers of visitors has come under scrutiny after the Uganda Cranes’ Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya exposed shortages in accommodation and food services. According to Nile Post, the match at Hoima City Stadium last month drew fans from across the country, quickly filling hotels and leaving some supporters to sleep in Kampala and travel in on match day. Some food outlets also struggled to handle the increased demand.

The report says the experience has raised questions about whether Hoima is ready for AFCON 2027, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania and is scheduled to begin on June 19, 2027. Local leaders and football officials said the city still needs more rooms, better hospitality services and broader planning for ordinary fans, not just officials and dignitaries expected to use higher-end hotels.

Hoima City West MP Ismail Kasule described the situation as a warning sign for government planning. Other local leaders urged authorities to speed up funding promised to hotel owners so they can expand facilities, while also supporting smaller guest houses and food businesses. National Council of Sports general secretary Bernard Ogwel and a local AFCON organizing committee member also used the moment to encourage investment in Hoima and the wider Bunyoro region, saying the stadium and tournament could bring tourism and business opportunities. The concerns add to broader calls for faster delivery of infrastructure and project funding ahead of the continental event.
