Hima Cement-Sponsored Clash of the Titans Calls for More Golf in Schools

The fifth edition of the Hima Cement-sponsored Clash of the Titans golf tournament has put fresh attention on efforts to restore golf to Uganda’s schools. According to Nile Post, the opening leg took place at Uganda Golf Club in Kitante and drew more than 251 alumni from 21 traditional schools under the theme “Back to School.”

Organizers and golf officials used the event to urge old boys and old girls to support school-based golf programs with their networks, money and influence. Uganda Golf Union president Jackson Were said alumni should help send the message that golf belongs on school sports calendars, while also pointing to the need for support from the National Council of Sports. Hima Cement’s brand and communications manager, Leonah Nekusa, said the tournament fits the company’s emphasis on long-term relationships and community-building.

The competition also produced early winners. Bwerayange Girls’ Josephine Njoroge led the ladies’ category with 39 points, while Mbarara High School alumnus Joel Nagaba topped the men’s standings with 41 points. Other individual prizes included longest drive and nearest-to-the-pin awards, along with a seniors’ category winner.

The tournament’s second leg and grand finale are scheduled for October 10 at Entebbe Golf Club. Organizers say the finale will continue promoting the broader goal of expanding golf beyond established clubs and into schools, where they hope it can grow at grassroots level.
