Heavy Security Deployed as NUP Candidate Wins After Violence Disrupts Nansana LC1 Poll

Nile Post reported that voting in Nsumbi Village, Nansana Municipality, was disrupted during Local Council One elections after a dispute over voter verification escalated into clashes. The report said police and military personnel were deployed to restore order after residents who could not confirm their names on the register became stranded outside the polling station around 9:00am and confronted election officials.

According to the publisher, independent candidate Patrick Ntalo faulted election officials for disorganisation during the verification process and said he withdrew from the race because of the confusion. The situation reportedly intensified after voters were instructed to line up, with some accusing Robert Muwawu and his supporters of telling people already in the queue to leave and undergo another verification process. Those voters resisted, saying they had already been cleared.

Nile Post said security officers later required voters to present both voter cards and national identity cards before casting ballots, a move that allowed officials to reorganise and continue the exercise. Security personnel also reportedly blocked attempts by some candidates to declare a winner before all verified voters in the queue had voted.

At the end of polling, National Unity Platform candidate Robert Muwawu was declared winner with 518 votes. Four candidates had contested the LC1 chairperson seat, though the report described the main race as being between Muwawu and Ntalo. The deployment remained in place until the process concluded, with officials saying calm had been restored after the earlier violence. LC1 elections are significant because they determine village-level leadership, often the first point of contact between residents and local government structures.
