Hearts sign Mendy for potential Forest Green record fee

BBC Sport reports that Forest Green Rovers have sold midfielder Laurent Mendy to Heart of Midlothian in a deal the National League club says could become its record incoming fee. Forest Green said the total would be close to £1 million if performance-related targets are achieved. Hearts have signed the 29-year-old on a three-year contract after identifying him as a long-term target.

Forest Green manager Robbie Savage, speaking via the club’s website, described the move as a major chance for Mendy to advance his career and said the club would receive a record fee if the full terms are met. Mendy had joined Forest Green from Macclesfield last year, following Savage, and quickly became a central figure. He made 47 appearances as Forest Green finished seventh and then lost in the National League play-off quarter-finals.

Hearts said Mendy stood out for Forest Green last season, pointing to his size, physical presence and ability to operate in more than one role. Although often used at centre-half, the Scottish Premiership club noted that his comfort on the ball allowed him to move forward and add an extra midfield option.

The move is a step up in league level for a player who has built his career across the lower tiers. BBC Sport notes that Mendy, who was born in France, has previously played for clubs including Thamesmead Town, Greenwich Borough, Whyteleafe, Ashford United, Dartford, VCD Athletic and Macclesfield, with a spell in Sweden at Amal.
