Health Ministry Warns Against Burning Garbage as Respiratory Illnesses Rise

What the report says
Uganda’s Ministry of Health has warned people against burning garbage, especially plastic waste, after linking a rise in respiratory illnesses at Mulago Hospital partly to air pollution. According to Nile Post, the ministry said smoke and other pollutants from burning rubbish can harm the respiratory system and contribute to illness.
The warning was delivered by Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Dr Diana Atwine during a waste management demonstration on waste segregation at Kisaasi and Kulambiro markets in Nakawa West. She urged the public to dispose of waste properly instead of setting it on fire, and said better waste handling is important for protecting communities from pollution-related health problems.
The ministry’s comments come as Uganda prepares for National Cleaning Day on August 29, with the main event expected in Kyaliwajjala. The report also noted that Kampala authorities, including KCCA officials, are encouraging residents to separate waste, use collection trucks and avoid dumping garbage along roadsides and in public spaces. Officials said segregation can reduce collection costs and support recycling.
More broadly, the message reflects growing concern in Kampala over waste management and urban pollution. While the article focuses on public health risks tied to garbage burning, it also points to ongoing efforts by city and health officials to improve cleanliness and reduce disease linked to poor disposal practices.
