Health authorities probe two suspected Ebola cases in northeast Nigeria

What the report says
Nigeria’s health authorities are investigating two suspected Ebola cases in the country’s northeast, according to Al Jazeera’s report published Oct. 31, 2026. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention said both people have been isolated while officials carry out contact tracing and laboratory testing. The agency stressed that suspected cases are not the same as confirmed infections and that results from testing will determine the next steps.
The report says the investigation comes shortly after Nigeria said it had detected its first Ebola case in more than a decade on Oct. 20. Al Jazeera also noted that Nigeria recently became the fifth country affected by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola after an imported case was reported. In that instance, a Swiss woman who had traveled to Nigeria from Uganda tested positive and was later evacuated to Switzerland with her husband.
The broader outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May, according to the article, and has since spread to several countries. Al Jazeera reported that the DRC outbreak is the largest in that country’s history, with more than 10,300 confirmed cases and over 5,000 deaths attributed to the strain. The situation underscores the importance of rapid detection, contact tracing and infection control in limiting further spread.
