Head of Hamas-led police in northern Gaza killed by Israeli strike

Al Jazeera, citing its staff, Reuters, Gaza’s Hamas-run interior ministry and medics, reported that Brigadier-General Abdel-Nasser Al-Maqadma, the head of the Hamas-led police in northern Gaza and governor of the area, was killed by an Israeli air strike on Saturday in the Sheikh Radwan area north of Gaza City. The report, published July 25, 2026, said Israel’s military described Al-Maqadma as also belonging to Hamas’s military wing.

The same report said five other Palestinians died in separate incidents linked to Israeli strikes or earlier injuries. A Palestinian medic was reported killed in Nuseirat refugee camp, two people were killed in a house in Khan Younis, and a later strike in Khan Younis killed high school student Khaled Al-Breim. Relatives told Al Jazeera he had recently finished high school and was preparing for university. A sixth reported fatality was a policeman who died Saturday from wounds sustained in an Israeli strike the previous week.

Israel’s military said the Khan Younis house was struck to target a member of Islamic Jihad, according to Al Jazeera. The outlet also reported that Israel has killed dozens of members of the Hamas-led police force in recent months, saying Israeli authorities view some as linked to Hamas’s armed wing and as active threats.

Hamas, according to the report, accuses Israel of intentionally targeting the police force to undermine stability in Gaza and says the strikes violate a US-brokered ceasefire reached in October. Al Jazeera cited Gaza’s health ministry as saying more than 1,180 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli attacks since the truce, while four Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza over the same period.
