'He could be happier' - why is Estevao becoming Chelsea's forgotten man?

What the report says
Chelsea forward Estevao is struggling for minutes under Xabi Alonso, with BBC Sport reporting that the 19-year-old has made only two starts in all competitions this season and has not started any of Chelsea’s eight Premier League matches since Alonso took over. The Brazilian, who joined from Palmeiras last summer, was again left on the bench in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat by Liverpool at Anfield, despite Chelsea needing attacking options late on.
BBC Sport says the main reason for his limited role is competition in Chelsea’s attack, especially the strong form of Pedro Neto. Neto has been used on the right side, Estevao’s preferred area, and has kept his place with a run of starts and goals. Chelsea’s attacking places are also occupied by Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, making it harder for Estevao to break in. In Alonso’s system, Estevao has often been used deeper or as a wing-back, a role that appears to suit him less.
After the Liverpool match, Alonso said Estevao “could be happier” because he wants to play, but added that the season is long and opportunities will come. Former players quoted by BBC Sport suggested his lack of game time is partly tied to the demands of English football and the balance of the team. The issue matters because Estevao was viewed as one of Chelsea’s most exciting young signings, yet is now waiting for a chance to establish himself.
