Harvard agrees to pay millions after morgue manager sold body parts

What the report says
Harvard Medical School has agreed to a $53 million settlement with families who sued over the handling of donated human remains. The deal, reported by BBC World News and proposed in a Boston court on Monday, would resolve civil claims tied to misconduct by former morgue manager Cedric Lodge, who pleaded guilty to stealing body parts from cadavers and selling them on the black market.
According to the BBC report, prosecutors said Lodge used his role in the school’s Anatomical Gifts Program to remove remains donated for medical research and pass them to buyers in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. The article says the scheme ran from 2018 to 2021. Lodge was later sentenced to eight years in prison, and his wife received a sentence of one year and one day.
The settlement follows lawsuits filed in 2023 by families who alleged Harvard failed to stop the activity for years. Those cases were initially dismissed, but the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court later revived them. Harvard said in a letter shared Monday that settlement funds would be set up once the court approves the agreement, and the university also plans to create an annual scholarship beginning in the 2027-2028 academic year in honor of anatomical donors.
The case is significant because it raises questions about oversight, donor trust and the treatment of bodies used in medical education. The BBC report says the agreement would close a painful chapter for the families, though the broader fallout from the scandal may continue.
