Hamer rejoins Coventry City on 'long-term' deal

Coventry City have brought back midfielder Gustavo Hamer from Sheffield United on a long-term contract, with the transfer fee not disclosed. BBC Sport reported that the 29-year-old returns to the club he represented for three seasons before leaving for Sheffield United in 2023.

Hamer made a strong impact in his first spell at Coventry, scoring 19 goals in 132 appearances and winning the club’s player of the year award for 2021-22. He also played a part in Coventry’s push toward the Premier League, including during their Championship play-off campaign in 2022-23. After joining Sheffield United, he spent one season in the Premier League with the Yorkshire club in 2023-24.

The move gives Coventry a familiar creative midfielder with top-flight experience as they continue to strengthen their squad. Hamer told BBC Sport he was delighted to return, saying the support from fans had meant a lot to him and that he wants to repay that backing with goals, assists and committed performances.

Before moving to England, Hamer played in the Netherlands for Feyenoord and PEC Zwolle and represented the Netherlands at youth level. His return is notable because it reunites Coventry with a player who was previously one of their standout performers and adds experience at both Championship and Premier League level.
