Hailstorm Destroys 1,600 Acres of Crops, School Roof in Amolatar

What the report says
Kioga North MP Geoffrey Ocen Kiring has asked the Ugandan government to respond quickly after a hailstorm damaged crops and a school in Amolatar District, according to Dokolo Post. The report says the storm affected about 1,600 acres of food crops and hit households in Akwon and Aputi sub-counties, leaving 964 families facing food insecurity and loss of income.
Ocen raised the issue in Parliament as a matter of urgent national importance. He said the weather event destroyed crops such as beans, simsim, cassava, millet and sorghum, which are important both for food and for household earnings. He also said many families do not have the money to buy seeds for replanting while the rains are still ongoing, increasing the risk of a deeper food crisis.
The article says the storm also blew off the roof of a four-classroom block at Awelo Primary School, disrupting lessons. Pupils are reportedly studying in a nearby church while repairs are pending. Ocen warned that the damage affects safety and attendance, and he urged the Ministry of Education and Sports, together with the Office of the Prime Minister, to provide 200 iron sheets for repairs. He also called on the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Agriculture to supply seeds to help farmers recover. In broader context, such appeals are commonly made in Uganda after extreme weather events, especially where rural communities depend heavily on seasonal crops.
