Gunmen rob, rape woman after forcing her to reveal mobile money PIN

Police in Obongi District are investigating a violent robbery and sexual assault case reported by Nile Post, in which two armed men allegedly attacked a woman as she returned home from Konyokonyo Centre. The incident was said to have happened at about 7:20 p.m. on August 31, 2026, and was reported after midnight the next day under Obongi CRB 201/2026.

According to police, the suspects, who were reportedly carrying sub-machine guns, stole a handbag containing Shs98,000 and an Infinix phone before forcing the victim to reveal her mobile money PIN. Investigators said Shs700,000 was then transferred from her account to an MTN number that has not been disclosed. The attackers allegedly took the woman about 100 metres into a maize garden, where she was assaulted and raped before they fled.

Police said officers from Morobi and Itula police stations responded to the scene and recovered a damaged phone, a small brown bag and a cartridge, which has been sent for forensic analysis. North West Nile regional police spokesperson Collins Asea said investigators are working to identify and arrest the suspects and recover the firearms believed to have been used.

The report also said police suspect the same group may have robbed other people in the Morobi area that evening. Authorities have appealed to residents to share any information that could help trace the suspects. More broadly, the case highlights continuing concerns about armed crime and the misuse of mobile money in rural communities.
