What the report says

Japan is facing renewed anger after a 20-year-old US Marine was arrested on suspicion of killing a 39-year-old woman at a hotel in Naha, Okinawa, in a case that has intensified long-running resentment over crimes linked to US troops stationed in the country. According to Al Jazeera, Japanese police detained the Marine on Sunday and sent him to prosecutors on Monday. He has denied the accusation. Police said he is suspected of killing the woman and taking her wallet; Japanese media cited police reports saying her body was found in a hotel room and that she appeared to have been strangled.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the killing as a “heinous crime” and said Tokyo had asked Washington for full cooperation with the investigation and stricter discipline among US military personnel. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said Japan has protested to the United States at multiple levels and will continue pressing for tighter enforcement of discipline. The Japanese foreign and defense ministries also summoned the US ambassador and the commander of US forces in Japan.

The case has triggered protests in Okinawa and Tokyo, with demonstrators voicing anger over the burden of hosting a large US military presence. Al Jazeera reported that about 54,000 US personnel are stationed in Japan, most of them in Okinawa. The incident has revived debate over the conduct of foreign troops and the local impact of the US base network, which has long been a sensitive political issue in Okinawa.
