NBC Sports Philadelphia reported that the Philadelphia Eagles opened training camp Wednesday with edge rusher Jonathan Greenard on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of a pectoral strain. The team said the injury happened during an offseason weight-room session. Greenard, 29, joined the Eagles in April as one of their biggest free-agent additions.

General manager Howie Roseman told reporters before the first practice that the club is taking a cautious approach and does not view the issue as a long-term concern. He did not provide a specific return date, but indicated the Eagles are not worried about Greenard being unavailable when the regular season begins. Roseman pointed to Greenard’s preparation habits and NFL experience as reasons for confidence once he is cleared.

According to NBC Sports Philadelphia, Greenard signed a four-year deal that included a $23.3 million signing bonus and carries a $24.5 million annual average, placing him among the higher-paid edge rushers in the league and among the top-paid Eagles. He had 38 sacks over six NFL seasons, including back-to-back 12-sack years, and made the Pro Bowl in 2024.

The injury is notable because Greenard is expected to lead a revamped Philadelphia pass rush. NBC Sports Philadelphia noted the Eagles had 42 sacks last season, far below their 70-sack 2022 campaign. Greenard’s recent history also includes shoulder trouble: he missed five games last year, finished with three sacks in 12 games, and had shoulder surgery after the season.
