Green Growth Institute Commits Shs26bn to Improve Waste Management

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), an international body based in South Korea, plans to invest about US$7 million, or Shs26 billion, in Uganda to support environmental conservation and improve waste management. Nile Post reports that the funding will go toward restoring degraded environments, strengthening waste systems and developing ways to turn discarded materials into useful products.

According to the report, the programme will include research into where waste is generated, which areas produce the most of it and how different types of waste can be converted into valuable resources. Philip Muwanika, GGGI’s country coordinator, said the initiative will also examine activities that contribute to waste creation, including how meat, food and fruits are stored, with the aim of reducing spoilage and limiting edible losses.

The investment is expected to benefit communities in several parts of Uganda, including Wakiso District and Nansana Municipality, where local authorities have been grappling with waste management and environmental degradation. The municipality has recently been running awareness campaigns on conservation and proper waste disposal, while officials continue to seek support for protecting wetlands and other sensitive environmental areas.

The move adds to wider efforts in Uganda to improve urban sanitation, reduce waste and promote circular-economy practices. As reported by Nile Post, the funding will be used across restoration, research and community-level projects, though specific project timelines were not given.
