Granny wanted a priest, parents a medic, but Conrad chose comedy

What the report says
Just Conrad, the stage name of comedian Just Conrad Ankunda, is preparing for his first comedy special, “The Underdogs,” according to The Observer. In an interview published by the outlet, he said his family once envisioned a very different future for him: his grandmother hoped he would become a priest, while his parents pushed him toward medicine. Instead, he moved into stand-up comedy after training as a clinician, though he is not practicing medicine now.
The Observer reports that Conrad grew up largely with his grandmother and attended Catholic schools in Bushenyi and later Kitende, which he said reflected her religious hopes for him. He described himself as a quiet child who only began to realize he could make people laugh after an on-stage moment at a campus cultural event. That experience, he said, helped convince him to pursue comedy seriously.
He told the publication that he made comedy his full-time focus in 2023 and has been building material since then. Conrad also spoke about the limited number of dedicated stand-up venues in Uganda, saying performers often have few opportunities to stage new material. Beyond his debut special, he said he hopes to tour parts of Africa next year, starting with Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
The interview presents his special as a personal milestone and a chance to turn family expectations, career pressure and everyday experiences into material for audiences.
