Govt Launches Emergency Food Distribution for Nearly 314,000 Households in Karamoja

What the report says
Nile Post reports that Uganda’s Office of the Prime Minister has started an emergency food relief operation in the Karamoja sub-region after an extended dry spell damaged agricultural production and left many families short of food. The programme was launched in Kaabong District, with initial supplies reaching beneficiaries in Sidok Sub-county before a wider rollout across the region.
According to the report, the intervention is intended to reach 313,987 households in 480 parishes across Karamoja’s nine districts. Officials said the relief package totals 9,419,610 kilograms of maize flour and dry beans, while local leaders indicated that about 1.3 million kilograms had already been stocked at the Kaabong warehouse ahead of distribution.
Minister for Karamoja Affairs John Baptist Lokii urged residents to conserve the food and warned that the supplies should not be sold. State Minister Esther Anyakun said the response includes support from government agencies and development partners, with UNICEF expected to assist feeding for children under five, the World Food Programme supporting meals for schoolchildren, and OPM providing household relief.
The reported intervention matters because Karamoja has faced recurring food insecurity linked to irregular rainfall, drought conditions and low farm output. Nile Post says the distribution is expected to continue across all nine districts in the coming weeks as authorities try to reach households considered vulnerable during the current shortage.
