Government Releases Shs961.2 Billion to Health Sector for Second Quarter

What the report says
The Ugandan government has released Shs961.2 billion to key health-sector institutions for the second quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year, according to Nile Post. The funding was announced as part of the Ministry of Finance’s wider second-quarter expenditure programme for the October-to-December period, which also covered other public institutions and priority programmes.
The largest allocations in the health breakdown went to the Ministry of Health, which received Shs416.5 billion, and the National Medical Stores (NMS), which was allocated Shs284.7 billion. NMS is responsible for procuring and distributing medicines and medical supplies to public facilities, so its share is significant for the availability of essential drugs and commodities. The article said the ministry funds are meant to support its programmes and activities, though it did not provide a more detailed internal breakdown.
Specialised treatment institutions also received substantial support. The Uganda Cancer Institute and Uganda Heart Institute were allocated a combined Shs165.5 billion, while national and regional referral hospitals received Shs94.5 billion. Together, these releases total Shs961.2 billion for the listed health institutions.
The report said the funding fits within the government’s Human Capital Development priorities, which include health, education and social protection. It comes amid ongoing public demand for stronger access to medicines, better referral services and more specialised care, especially for cancer and cardiovascular conditions. The figures indicate released funds, but not how much has yet been spent or disbursed to individual facilities.
