Government Mobilises Local Leaders for Nationwide Cleaning Exercise

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has asked local government leaders, including elected LC chairpersons, to start mobilising residents and gathering equipment ahead of Uganda’s second nationwide cleaning exercise, set for August 29, according to Nile Post. She said communities should be prepared in good time and that plans should include vehicles for waste collection and suitable disposal sites.

The government says the exercise is meant to reduce garbage buildup and encourage cleaner, healthier communities, with particular concern about waste accumulation in parts of Kampala. The main Kampala activity is planned for Kyaliwajjala UMEA Primary School in Kira Municipality. The article says the campaign follows an earlier mandatory nationwide cleaning exercise launched on July 25, which drew large participation and lasted about three hours.

Nabbanja also told Seventh-day Adventist worshippers that Saturday church attendance would still be possible after the cleaning, while encouraging them to take part in Sunday’s activities. Minister of State for Local Government Justine Namere urged politicians, especially those in opposition, not to politicise the initiative. Other ministers, led by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda, also called on Ugandans to join in. The report adds that only designated vehicles will be allowed on Ngudo Road during the Kampala event.
