Government Launches Emergency Food Relief for Karamoja

Nile Post reported that the Ugandan government has begun an emergency food relief operation for Karamoja, where a prolonged dry spell has undermined farming and left many households short of food. The report said local leaders and officials have linked at least 19 deaths in the past week to starvation, intensifying calls for rapid assistance to vulnerable communities.

According to the report, the Office of the Prime Minister said in a July 20, 2026 statement that 9,419,610 kilograms of maize flour and dry beans will be distributed to 313,987 households in 480 parishes across Karamoja’s nine districts. Each targeted household is expected to receive 20 kilograms of posho and 10 kilograms of beans. The operation was launched at National Enterprise Corporation headquarters in Bugolobi, Kampala, by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.

Nile Post said the OPM is coordinating the exercise with the National Enterprise Corporation, the UPDF, Uganda Prisons Service, Uganda Police Force and local governments. Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Minister Sam Engola urged leaders, civil society and beneficiaries to support peaceful and accountable distribution, while OPM Permanent Secretary Alex Kakooza said authorities would continue monitoring food security in Karamoja and nearby districts.

The intervention matters because Karamoja has long faced recurring drought and climate-related food insecurity, and the current shortage has reportedly depleted household reserves after crop losses. Nile Post reported that the government is presenting the distribution as both immediate humanitarian support and part of wider efforts to build resilience under the recently approved Karamoja Regional Development Plan.
