Government delivers 900 bags of subsidised organic fertiliser to Ntungamo farmers

Ntungamo District has received 900 bags of 50-kilogram organic fertiliser through a government co-funding programme run by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries. According to Nile Post, the supply is intended to support higher crop productivity and improved farmer incomes, with the public sector covering 70 percent of the cost and participating farmers paying the remaining 30 percent.

District officials used the handover to call for careful and transparent selection of beneficiaries. Ntungamo District Production Officer Dr Yake Basulila said the district wants to expand the use of organic fertiliser to improve soil fertility and yields. District Vice Chairperson Asuman Kigongo welcomed the intervention, saying the inputs would help farmers raise production under the subsidy arrangement.

Resident District Commissioner Miriam Kagaiga urged technical staff to prioritise farmers with active gardens so the fertiliser is used immediately rather than stored away. A representative of MAAIF said the programme fits into a wider government effort to increase agricultural output and household earnings, with a long-term target of 20 million bags by 2040. The supplier, DEI BioPharma, said it had completed its contract to deliver the fertiliser to Ntungamo.

The development matters because subsidised inputs can ease production costs for farmers, but officials stressed that local targeting will determine how much the programme benefits working agricultural households.
