Government Announces Official Burial Programme for King Oyo as Remains Arrive Friday

The Ugandan government has announced an official burial programme for the late King of Tooro, Rukirabasaija Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, whose remains are scheduled to arrive at Entebbe International Airport on Friday, September 4, 2026. The announcement was made by Minister for the Presidency Babirye Milly Babalanda during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on Thursday, September 3.

According to the government, the burial will be handled through a whole-of-government arrangement involving several ministries, security agencies, and the Tooro royal family. The programme includes support at key sites such as the airport, Karuzika Royal Palace, Buziga Royal Residence, Karambi Royal Tombs, and St. John’s Cathedral. Officials said arrangements also cover transport, security, feeding for mourners, health services, and other funeral logistics.

Babalanda said the late monarch, who died in Dallas, United States, on August 28, had been given special national attention following Cabinet discussions at State House Entebbe and subsequent parliamentary tribute sessions. She said the government had coordinated with the Kingdom of Tooro and hospitals in the United States, with travel and repatriation through Nairobi and on to Uganda.

The burial preparations reflect the significance of the Tooro monarchy in Uganda’s cultural and political life. More generally, such state-supported funerals in Uganda are often used to honor prominent traditional leaders and manage large public gatherings with protocol, security, and ceremonial arrangements.
