Gov’t suspends all school trips after King David tragedy

The Independent Uganda, citing URN, reported that Uganda’s government has halted all school trips and educational excursions nationwide with immediate effect after a deadly crash involving pupils from King David Junior School in Makindye. Acting Education Minister Dr John Chrysostom Muyingo announced the suspension on Friday, July 18, 2026, as the school community mourned the deaths of nearly 20 pupils. The school has been closed for two weeks to give learners, staff and families time to grieve.

According to the report, the pupils were returning from a study tour to Sipi Falls when the crash occurred on Thursday evening in Kapchorwa District. Early accounts cited by the publisher suggested the school bus developed mechanical problems, while other reports raised concerns about possible overloading and the vehicle’s roadworthiness. Parents gathered at the school seeking information, with some demanding an immediate ban on such trips.

Muyingo said educational visits can support learning but must not put children at risk. He directed the Ministry of Education and Sports’ Permanent Secretary to urgently review rules governing school travel and said the suspension will remain in place until stronger safeguards are developed. Schools were reminded to use licensed, roadworthy vehicles, qualified drivers with good safety records, risk assessments, required approvals, proper supervision, informed parents, rested drivers and to avoid overnight travel.

The ministry said it is coordinating with Uganda Police, the Ministry of Works and Transport and other agencies to investigate the recent crashes and reduce the risk of similar incidents. The decision could affect schools across the country, especially those that had planned study tours or end-of-term excursions.
