Gov’t Announces Official Burial Programme for Gen. Moses Ali as Nation Mourns West Nile Icon

Watchdog Uganda reports that the Government of Uganda has announced an official burial programme for Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, the late Member of Parliament for Adjumani West and former 2nd Deputy Prime Minister. Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda, who chairs the National Organising Committee, briefed journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on the arrangements following Ali’s death at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala on Saturday, 18 July 2026, at 4:00pm.

According to the report, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni notified the country of Ali’s death and directed that he be accorded an official burial under Article 99 of the Constitution. Babalanda described Ali as a major figure in Uganda’s political, military, government and Islamic religious life, and as a respected leader in the West Nile region. Special prayers were held on Sunday, 19 July, at Naguru Mosque, Islamic University in Uganda’s Kibuli Campus, Kibuli Mosque and Old Kampala Mosque.

The organising committee includes representatives from the Office of the President, Parliament, the UPDF, Uganda Police Force and the family. The programme listed by the publisher included Cabinet paying tribute at State House on Monday, a vigil and private prayers in Naguru, a parliamentary tribute on Tuesday with the President expected as chief mourner, and the body’s transfer to Abiri Chako Village in Adjumani District.

The burial events were scheduled to continue on Wednesday, 22 July, with a West Nile regional district council sitting at Paridi Stadium in Adjumani, followed by prayers and burial. Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo was named to represent government.
