Google just had its first negative cash flow quarter due to massive AI spending - Ars Technica

What the report says
Ars Technica reports that Google’s parent company posted $119.8 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, ahead of analyst expectations, but recorded negative free cash flow for the first time since going public. The shift was driven by a rapid increase in capital spending tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure, including data centers and related systems.
According to the report, Google generated about $39.1 billion in operating cash flow after excluding non-cash investment-related earnings, up roughly 40% from the same quarter in 2025. However, the company spent $44.9 billion on expanding its AI footprint during the quarter, leaving free cash flow at about negative $5.8 billion. Ars noted that Google remains highly profitable and holds more than $100 billion in cash reserves, but the cash-flow figure is significant because it reflects money available after capital investments.
The company also raised its 2026 capital expenditure outlook to as much as $205 billion, compared with an earlier expectation of $180 billion to $190 billion and $91 billion spent in 2025. Revenue highlights included $63.3 billion from search, $24.8 billion from Google Cloud, $12.9 billion from subscriptions, platforms and devices, and $11.1 billion from YouTube ads.
The report says Google shares fell after the results, as investors increasingly scrutinize the cost of the AI buildout across major technology firms. The broader context is a competitive race among leading AI companies to fund data-center capacity, train larger models and deliver new services, with uncertainty over how quickly those investments will translate into durable returns.
