Kotaku reported on July 21, 2026, that a new Cloudflare report argues automated systems now account for a majority of internet activity, with more than half of web traffic described as non-human. The report, cited by Kotaku via The New York Times, says human visits fell across major industries from June 2025 to April 2026, with declines of at least 35 percent and some sectors down by as much as 40 percent in under a year.

The article highlights Cloudflare’s view that Google has an especially influential position because it supplies about 88 percent of referral traffic. Kotaku connects the reported drop to Google’s Gemini-powered AI Overview in search, which can summarize information on the results page rather than sending users to the original websites. Publishers have referred to this scenario as “Google Zero,” meaning a future in which search sends little or no traffic back to sites.

Cloudflare also reported that AI training made up 52 percent of crawler requests as of June 2026, compared with 22 percent in spring 2025. Kotaku noted an Adweek report that Google uses a single crawler both to index websites for search and to train AI systems, creating a difficult choice for publishers that may want to avoid AI use while remaining discoverable in Google Search.

Kotaku said the United Kingdom is an exception because the Competition and Markets Authority moved in June 2026 to require Google to let publishers opt out of AI Overview without being removed from search indexing. Google has announced a UK trial for such controls. The broader issue matters because many media and business websites depend on search referrals for audience and advertising revenue.
