ScienceDaily, citing materials from the University of Nottingham, reported on July 23 that researchers have created a fluoride-free dental gel designed to rebuild damaged tooth enamel, a tissue the human body cannot naturally regenerate after it is lost. The work, published in Nature Communications, involved scientists from the university’s School of Pharmacy and Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering.

The gel is modeled on proteins that help form enamel in early life. Once applied to a tooth, it creates a thin coating that enters tiny cracks and porous areas, then uses calcium and phosphate already present in saliva to guide new mineral growth. The researchers say this process produces crystals aligned with the existing tooth structure, helping the repaired area resemble healthy enamel rather than a separate surface layer.

According to the report, the material may be useful for enamel weakened by erosion or mineral loss, for strengthening intact enamel, and for covering exposed dentine, the softer layer beneath enamel that can cause tooth sensitivity when uncovered. The team tested regenerated material under simulated everyday conditions, including brushing, chewing forces and acidic exposure, and reported that its mechanical behavior was similar to natural enamel.

The development matters because enamel loss contributes to decay, sensitivity and other dental problems, while current fluoride and remineralization treatments can mainly protect or strengthen remaining enamel rather than restore its original structure. The Nottingham team is pursuing commercial development through a start-up, Mintech-Bio, and said the technology could be adapted for professional dental treatments, sensitivity products or restorative materials, though the ScienceDaily report does not indicate that a consumer product is already available.
