Goalkeeper Startup joins WSL newcomers Birmingham

BBC Sport reports that Birmingham City have signed goalkeeper Katie Startup after her contract with Manchester City expired. The 27-year-old joins the newly promoted Women’s Super League side on what the outlet says is believed to be a two-year deal, as Birmingham prepare for their return to the top flight under manager Amy Merricks.

Startup was part of the Manchester City squad that won the Women’s Super League and Women’s FA Cup double in 2025-26, although BBC Sport notes she did not make a competitive appearance for the club after arriving from Brighton in 2024. She had also spent the early part of last season on loan at Everton before being recalled by City in November during their title push.

The move reunites Startup with Merricks and director Hope Powell, both of whom she previously worked with during her time at Brighton. BBC Sport reported that Startup cited those existing relationships and shared values as a major factor in the decision, while Merricks highlighted her professionalism, team qualities and experience in WSL environments.

Startup came through Chelsea’s academy and joined Charlton Athletic in 2017 before moving to Brighton three years later. She has also had loan spells with Charlton, Liverpool and Manchester City. For Birmingham, the signing adds top-flight depth and experience to a squad aiming to establish itself in the WSL after promotion from WSL 2.
