Ghana to host 28th AMCOA conference in August to shape future of health regulation in Africa

Classfmonline.com reports that Ghana’s Medical and Dental Council has begun preparations to host the 28th Annual Scientific Conference of the Association of Medical Councils of Africa in Accra. The five-day event is scheduled for 23 to 27 August 2026 at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, with the theme “Responsive Regulation for Safer Communities towards Universal Health Coverage.” The announcement was made by Dr Divine Ndonbi Banyubala, Registrar and CEO of the council, during a media launch at the MDC office complex.

According to the report, Dr Banyubala described the gathering as a continent-wide forum for strengthening the future of health-care regulation. AMCOA brings together medical and dental regulatory authorities across Africa and focuses on standards in medical training, professional registration, ethics, regulatory science and public protection. The conference is expected to draw at least 315 participants, including regulators, policymakers, professional bodies, academics, training institutions, health insurance schemes and development partners.

The programme will address issues such as fair and transparent regulatory systems, research and innovation, harmonised standards, professional mobility, technology-based verification of practitioners, fraud prevention, and maintaining standards during emergencies. Classfmonline.com also reports that a joint workshop involving the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities and the WHO Afro Region is planned.

The conference is expected to be opened on 24 August by President John Dramani Mahama and closed on 26 August by Speaker Alban Bagbin, according to the MDC. Ghanaian practitioners attending the scientific sessions will receive 13 CPD credit points. The council said registration is open through its website and appealed for support from corporate bodies, development partners and the media.
