President John Dramani Mahama has inaugurated the start of construction for a seven-storey, multi-purpose complex at Accra International Airport, according to Ghanaian Times via AllAfrica. The project is intended to ease congestion and improve the passenger experience at Ghana’s main airport, which the president linked to rising traffic and parking pressure since Terminal 3 opened.

The planned development includes 2,030 covered parking spaces, two hotels with 120 five-star rooms and 250 three-star rooms, plus shopping, dining and commercial areas. It will also feature a sky lounge and observatory. Mahama said the mix of hospitality and retail services is meant to make the airport enclave more convenient for travelers and create a more active business environment.

He described the project as part of broader planning for future growth, rather than a response to existing shortages alone. The president also highlighted technology and sustainability features, including automatic number plate recognition, cashless and ticketless parking, electric vehicle charging points and CCTV surveillance. He urged developers to focus on energy efficiency, waste management and professional service standards.

The report said Mahama sees the airport as a potential aviation and commercial hub for Ghana, with benefits for tourism, trade, investment and transit travel. More broadly, airport developments of this kind are increasingly designed to serve as business and hospitality centers as well as transport facilities.
