What the report says

Community members in Ningo-Prampram, Ghana, are urging Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu to investigate how local police have handled a series of reported assault, death threat and murder complaints. The appeal, reported by Ghanaian Times and distributed by AllAfrica, centers on claims that cases filed at the Ningo and Prampram police stations were sent back for family-level settlement rather than pursued through the justice system.

The concerns were raised by Eric Tetteh Anum, who serves as acting head of the Ashaley Botwe family of Ningo. He said the allegations include the reported killing of okada rider Timothy Teye Otubua in July, as well as attacks on other riders and threats against several people. According to the account, Otubua was allegedly beaten by men described as land guards linked to a local faction before his body was found on July 20.

Anum said the matter was reported to police and, in some accounts, referred to the Criminal Investigations Department, but residents believe there has been little visible action months later. He also said other riders were attacked after going to the area to ask about the death, and that several people remain concerned about unresolved complaints involving specific individuals.

The dispute has also spilled into a land and family-house controversy in Ningo, with some members alleging attempts to demolish property while other family gates oppose any demolition. More broadly, the case highlights concerns about public trust in local policing and whether customary settlement practices are being used in place of formal investigations.
