Ghana: Ghana Faces Challenge to Persuade Brics It Deserves a Seat At the Table

What the report says
Ghana has moved to apply for membership in BRICS, the grouping of major emerging economies, as it seeks to broaden its trade and diplomatic options beyond its traditional ties with Western institutions. The application was announced by Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who said membership could diversify Ghana’s partnerships and deepen cooperation with the Global South. The government has said it views BRICS as a complement to, not a replacement for, its current relationships with the IMF, World Bank and other partners.
The RFI report distributed by AllAfrica says Ghana sees practical economic reasons for joining, including stronger links with countries that already account for much of its trade. Analysts quoted in the article noted that several of Ghana’s leading trading partners are BRICS members and that the bloc’s growing economic weight makes it attractive for countries looking to expand commerce and investment. The piece also places Ghana’s bid in the context of BRICS’ expansion in recent years, as the group has added new full members and partner countries.
Even so, approval is not assured. According to the report, full membership requires consensus from all 11 existing BRICS members, and the timing of any decision remains unclear. The article also notes regional competition, including Nigeria’s current role as a BRICS partner, which may complicate Ghana’s case. Supporters of the bid argue that Ghana could offer stability, democratic credentials and additional regional influence, but the bloc will decide based on what it sees as Ghana’s strategic value.
