What the report says

The Ghana Armed Forces has declared its GHANBATT 92 deployment to the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) completed after a year-long tour in southern Lebanon, according to Ghanaian Times via AllAfrica. The mission, which began in September 2025 and was formally terminated on September 12, 2026, was carried out in a sharply deteriorating security environment marked by shelling, direct attacks and broader regional tensions.

At a parade in Accra, Chief of the Army Staff Major General Lawrence Kweku Gbetanu praised the troops for discipline, professionalism and resilience. He said the peacekeeping role had shifted into a much more dangerous operation and noted that the battalion endured a missile strike on its headquarters at Al-Qawzah on Ghana’s Independence Day, with injuries, damage to infrastructure and psychological strain among personnel. He also said support measures were being arranged for compensation, recovery and reintegration, and extended the troops’ disembarkation leave.

The report says GHANBATT 92 began with 862 personnel, later reduced to 615, including 103 women. It was formed around the 69th Airborne Force and replaced GHANBATT 91. The battalion’s activities in Lebanon included strengthening defensive positions, repairing damaged infrastructure, supporting civilians through civil-military cooperation and maintaining operations under UNIFIL. The citation read at the parade also commended the unit’s leadership and highlighted the Ghanaian contingent’s service in an active conflict zone, underscoring the risks faced by peacekeepers in the wider Middle East context.
