What the report says

Forms Capital Limited and MobileMoney Fintech Limited have renamed their overdraft product XtraBalance as MoMo Boost, Ghanaian Times reported via AllAfrica on July 23, 2026. The companies said the change is intended to make the service easier for customers to identify and use among MTN Mobile Money users in Ghana, while keeping the product’s underlying features the same.

According to the report, MoMo Boost remains an overdraft facility for eligible MTN MoMo customers whose wallet balances are too low to finish a transaction. Ishmael Abbey, head of business development at Forms Capital, said customer feedback influenced the rebrand and that the new name is meant to be simpler and more memorable. He said the facility can automatically cover approved shortfalls during qualifying transactions, reducing failed payments.

The Ghanaian Times reported that registered users may receive credit limits from GH¢50 to GH¢5,000, based on factors including usage and repayment history. Customers can access the product through the MTN MoMo USSD menu or the MTN MoMo app. Interest is charged on the amount used rather than the full approved limit, and the service can be applied to transfers, withdrawals, merchant and business payments, utility bills, airtime and data purchases.

Existing XtraBalance users do not need to sign up again, the report said; their credit limits, account history and repayment terms continue under the new brand. The rebrand matters because mobile-money-linked credit products are becoming a key part of digital financial services in Ghana, where convenience, customer trust and responsible access to short-term credit are important to adoption.
