What the report says

Rev. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament in Ghana, used a two-day media workshop in Accra to highlight what he said is an ongoing shortage of adequate office and meeting space for the legislature. According to Ghanaian Times, he argued that the limited facilities affect Parliament’s work as well as the Parliamentary Press Corps, which covers it daily.

Djietror linked the problem to wider questions about parliamentary infrastructure and operations. He said Parliament needs more functional spaces for meetings, caucus discussions, ministers’ lobbies and other internal work, so that members do not have to move elsewhere for routine consultations. He also referred to the 2019 “Drop that Chamber” campaign, which opposed a proposed new parliamentary chamber project.

The workshop, organised by Parliament’s Media Relations Department, focused on improving how journalists report on Parliament and on strengthening understanding of legislative procedures. Djietror and other speakers urged reporters to verify information carefully, stay impartial and help counter misinformation. The Majority Leader, James Agalga, and Minority representatives also called for open, fair and balanced media coverage of Parliament’s activities.

The issue matters because it touches both governance and public accountability: Parliament says it needs better facilities to function effectively, while journalists covering the institution say they need access, context and resources to report accurately on debates and decisions.
