What the report says

German police detained a suspect after a fire swept through the Eagle’s Nest, the former Nazi-era mountain retreat linked to Adolf Hitler, in Bavaria on Friday night, according to Al Jazeera’s reporting. Authorities said no one was injured at the Kehlsteinhaus, but the blaze triggered a large overnight response involving roughly 200 firefighters.

Police said a smoke detector raised the alarm around 9:50pm local time, and crews arriving at the remote Alpine site found the building fully engulfed. The location, perched more than 1,800 metres above sea level near Berchtesgaden, made firefighting efforts more difficult. Investigators were still working to determine the cause, and officials said they had taken a “suspicious person” into temporary custody while they examined any possible link to the fire.

German media cited by Al Jazeera reported that arson was being considered, though police had not confirmed that publicly. The site was built in 1937 and 1938 as a symbol of Nazi power and was used by Hitler for official visits and meetings. It survived World War II intact and has operated as a restaurant and historical exhibition space since 1952, making the fire significant both for safety reasons and because of the building’s controversial historical legacy.
