General Katumba Wamala to exit UPDF in major retirement exercise

Former Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Katumba Wamala is among 1,591 Uganda People’s Defence Forces personnel due to retire this month, according to a report from The Independent Uganda based on a UPDF statement. The retirement list spans ranks from generals to privates and includes 19 general officers, 222 senior officers, 205 junior officers and 1,364 militants, with several other senior commanders named as part of the exercise.

The army said 222 officers from major to colonel are scheduled to retire at a ceremony on August 12 at the Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya. A separate send-off for the 19 general officers will be announced later so they can be honoured appropriately. The UPDF said the ceremonies are meant to recognize service, sacrifice and patriotism across different levels of the force.

Ahead of the exits, the army has been holding financial literacy training for the outgoing personnel. Maj. Gen. James Kinalwa, speaking at Mbuya on behalf of the Chief of Joint Staff, urged them to plan for life after military service and to avoid poor financial decisions once regular salary and allowances end.
