What the report says

The Independent Uganda, citing URN, reports that the late Gen. Moses Ali will be given a state funeral on the instructions of President Yoweri Museveni. Minister of State for Defence Huda Olero announced the decision on Saturday after meeting Ali’s family at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala. The official burial programme is expected to be communicated by Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda after further consultations with the family.

According to a tentative family schedule reported by the publisher, funeral events are to start on Sunday with Islamic prayers in Kampala. The first Salat al-Janazah is planned for Naguru Mosque at 10:00 a.m., followed by prayers at Kibuli Mosque at 2:00 p.m. and at the Uganda National Mosque in Old Kampala at 4:00 p.m., where Mufti Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje is expected to lead the final prayer. The body is then due to be taken back to Ali’s Naguru residence for an overnight vigil.

The programme outlined in the report says the body will lie in state at Parliament on Monday morning before public viewing at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds later in the day. It is then expected to be flown to the West Nile sub-region ahead of burial at Ali’s ancestral home in Adjumani District on Tuesday, July 21.

The Independent reports that Gen. Ali died at Nakasero Hospital after several days in intensive care following recurring heart-related complications. Beyond the report, Ali was widely known as a senior Ugandan military and political figure, making the state funeral a significant national send-off.
