The Independent Uganda, carrying a URN obituary dated July 19, 2026, reviewed the life and political legacy of Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, a long-serving Ugandan soldier and politician widely known by supporters as the “Lion of Adjumani.” The report portrays Ali as one of the few public figures whose career spanned nearly every major phase of Uganda’s post-independence politics, from the governments of Milton Obote and Idi Amin to the long rule of President Yoweri Museveni.

According to the obituary, Ali was born on April 5, 1939, in present-day Adjumani District and built an unusual résumé as a soldier, lawyer, rebel commander, cabinet minister and parliamentarian. He joined the Uganda Army in the late 1960s, trained abroad, rose rapidly after Amin’s 1971 coup, and later held powerful government roles including Minister of Provincial Administration and Minister of Finance. The Independent notes that his senior position during Amin’s rule remains a central part of debate over his legacy, while saying available records directly linking him to specific abuses are limited.

After Amin’s fall in 1979, Ali went into exile and later founded the Uganda National Rescue Front, a West Nile-based rebel movement opposed to Obote’s second government. When Museveni’s National Resistance Army took power in 1986, Ali negotiated with the new administration, and the UNRF was integrated into the national military framework.

The report says Ali remained politically active into advanced age, winning re-election as MP for Adjumani West in the 2026 general election at 87, although he left Cabinet in the new administration. His career is presented as both a symbol of resilience and a reminder of Uganda’s difficult political history.
