MacRumors reports that Google has updated its Gemini app for Mac with a new voice activation shortcut and broader desktop-aware capabilities. The update, published Wednesday, July 29, 2026, lets users hold down the Fn key to open Gemini’s voice mode from any window on a Mac, allowing spoken prompts without first switching apps.

According to the report, the feature includes system-wide dictation that turns natural speech into text at the current cursor position. Google’s implementation is designed to ignore filler words such as “um” and “ah,” understand spoken corrections made mid-sentence, and insert formatted text where the user is working. MacRumors notes that the Fn key choice may feel familiar to Mac users because Apple’s built-in dictation can also be set to trigger through an Fn-key press.

The update also adds an optional screen-aware reasoning mode. When users choose to enable it, Gemini can use what is visible on the Mac display to help with tasks involving highlighted files, images, documents or selected text. MacRumors says this can include editing, summarizing and composing content inside the active app, as well as generating or modifying images when screen awareness is turned on.

The rollout is global for Gemini for Mac users in English, with Google planning support for additional languages later. The change matters because it pushes Gemini further into everyday desktop workflows, competing more directly with Apple’s own Mac dictation tools and emerging AI assistant features.
