Gayaza Junior turns to alumni, parents in Shs 704m bus drive

Gayaza Junior School has begun a Shs 704 million fundraising drive to buy a school bus, after expanding into two campuses that are about 40 kilometres apart and increasing its need for transport. According to The Observer, the school says hiring vehicles has become expensive and inconvenient as more pupils, staff and activities require movement between the campuses.

Head teacher Sarah Tebuguwa Kizito said the bus would support not only travel between sites, but also school trips and co-curricular programmes such as sports, music, dance and drama. The school says the vehicle is intended to improve safety and reliability for learners taking part in academic, religious and cultural activities. The proposed bus is expected to carry 67 pupils per trip, though it would serve the wider school community.

The campaign is targeting parents, alumni, companies, organizations, well-wishers and former pupils abroad. The school says it has already collected Shs 350 million, leaving Shs 354 million to reach the goal. It expects the drive could take up to a year, depending on how fast the remaining money is raised.

The Observer reports that the school has already chosen the bus type and hopes to buy it by the beginning of October 2026 if fundraising succeeds. It also says the school plans to share receipts, termly updates and a final financial report, and to employ a qualified driver and maintain the vehicle with regular safety checks.
